The Hamburger Rugby Club von 1950 eV (HRC) honors its 75th anniversary on June 14, 2025 – an exceptional anniversary for the only Hamburg club with a team in the 1st Bundesliga North/East. Founded on June 6, 1950, by journalist Emil Creydt, the HRC has developed in seven decades from a small, volunteer-run community into one of the leading rugby clubs in Northern Germany. The anniversary celebration at Saarlandstraße 71 offers sporting highlights with friendly matches against a French team, interactive stations, live music, a children’s program, and an exhibition on the club’s history – with free admission for the whole family. The Hamburg Rugby Club was established on June 6, 1950, under the supervision of Emil Creydt. Creydt, a journalist and later long-time vice president of the German Rugby Association, laid the foundation for a club that was characterized from the outset by its sense of community and sporting ambition. As early as 1953. During the 1950s and 1960s, the HRC experienced several existential crises. In 1958, internal disputes led to the founding of Wandsbeker RC, which was soon dissolved, and many founding members returned to the HRC. In 1969, the club faced dissolution again when membership numbers declined drastically. The club’s sporting breakthrough came in 1981/82.

Infrastructure and club life
Since 2006, the HRC has solely utilized the rugby colosseum in Hamburg’s Stadtpark on Saarlandstraße. The installation, with its clubhouse and recreating ground, offers optimal conditions for training and home games in the 1st Bundesliga North/East. The clubhouse in Barmbek-Süd (Imstedt 6) serves as a social center for members of all ages. In addition to the first team, the second and third men’s teams, as well as the women’s and youth teams, play their home games here. In 2008, former HRC players founded the Hamburg Rugby Club Support Association to specifically support youth development.
